Everytown for Gun Safety Releases Gun Control Talking Points for Thanksgiving Dinner

Bloomberg-funded Everytown for Gun Safety has released a guide to help gun control proponents talk their family members and friends into supporting more gun control at the Thanksgiving dinner table.

Titled, “Talking Turkey,” the guide purports to combat various “myths” perpetrated by the pro-Second Amendment community.

The “myths” include the maxim that more guns equal less crime, the NRA’s position that the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with gun, and the “myth” that a woman is safer with a gun in her home. Everytown attacks these “myths” by citing studies from 2003 and 2006, and then they claim “92 percent of Americans” support more gun control based on a poll taken in 2012.

In reality, the FBI shows that violent crime fell in 2013 while private gun sales soared. And over a larger period of time–1994 to 2009–a Congressional Research Service study showed that “firearm-related murder and non-negligent homicide” fell by nearly 50 percent at the same time that privately owned guns jumped from 192 million to 310 million.

Moreover, a recent Gallup poll also showed that 58 percent of women in America believe a gun makes their home safer. Nearly two-thirds of all Americans–male and female–believe this to be true as well.

Perhaps the best proof of this came during the November 4 midterm elections, where Breitbart News reported that gun control candidates were crushed around the country.

The “myth” dispelled on November 4 was the one that claimed Americans wanted more gun control.
