White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest affected a tone of sympathy for reporters who were hungry for a response to former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s comments about whether President Barack Obama really loves America.

During the White House press conference today, Earnest said that it was “sad” for Giuliani, pointing out that the former mayor’s comment “tarnishes that legacy so thoroughly.”

“I think, really, the only thing that I feel is to feel sorry for Rudy Giuliani today,” he said soberly.
