On March 5, brothers Carlton Hipps and Ramone Williams allegedly shot and killed Philadelphia Police Officer Robert Wilson III.

Hipps was out of prison on parole at the time, and “Williams has prior arrests for aggravated assaults and theft.” Background checks did not hinder the men in acquiring guns: They simply bypassed the checks by buying “their weapons on the streets.”

According to ABC 6, Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said Officer Wilson was in a Gamestop store “buying a video game as a gift for his 8-year-old son” when the attack occurred.

Wilson was standing at the counter when Hipps and Williams allegedly “entered the store and announced a robbery.” Wilson exchanged gunfire with the suspects, eventually receiving a fatal shot to the head.

Commissioner Ramsey said surveillance video of the attack shows Wilson move away from the counter to protect store patrons before his death. Ramsey said, “After seeing the video of what happened inside the store, he redefined what being a hero is all about.”

Hipps and Williams are “both charged with first degree murder, conspiracy, and attempted murder.”
