Former Gov. Martin O’Malley (D-MD) took a jab at presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, accusing her of changing positions on issues because of poll numbers instead of her own principles.
“I believe marriage is a human right, not a state right,” O’Malley said Thursday. “I’m glad she’s come around to that position as well. I believe that we do our country a disservice when we make it harder for new American immigrants to be able to abide by the rules of the road and obtain drivers licenses. And I’m glad she’s come around to that position now too.”
According to the Huffington Post, it is the first time O’Malley attacked Clinton since she announced her bid for president last weekend.
The jab came on Clinton’s changing statements regarding same sex marriage.
Clinton said this week that she would like to see the Supreme Court affirm same sex marriage, making it a constitutional right. But she previously hinted in an NPR interview last year that she would not support that ruling, citing states’ rights, according to the Huffington Post.
The Huffington Post reported Clinton said, “So, for me, marriage had always been a matter left to the states.” Clinton continued, “And in many of the conversations that I and my colleagues and supporters had, I fully endorse the efforts by activists who work state by state, and in fact that is what is working.”
O’Malley has always pushed issues such as same sex marriage during his time as Governor of Maryland, reported the Huffington Post.
