Rep. Ron DeSantis (R) has made it official: He’s running for Sen. Marco Rubio’s Senate seat in 2016.

“America needs a new generation of leaders to address the big issues facing the country: alleviating the middle class squeeze and promoting economic opportunity, confronting the significant national security challenges threatening the safety of our people, and reforming the culture of Washington, DC…As a candidate for Senate, I look forward to offering reforms based on limited government principles that will make our country stronger and more prosperous.  I see a bright future for Florida and for America and my campaign will be about the ideas and principles that will help us achieve a more perfect union.”-Rep.Ron DeSantis (R)

DeSantis, a Naval Reserve Officer whose foreign policy bona fides are second to none, has already received a ringing endorsement from grassroots heavyweight FreedomWorks PAC.

Here is what FreedomWorks PAC’s chairman Adam Brandonsaid about DeSantis’ candidacy for Senate:

“I’m proud that Congressman DeSantis is the first endorsement of the 2016 cycle by FreedomWorks PAC. Congressman DeSantis is a fiscal conservative leader who will bring much-needed leadership on important issues to the U.S. Senate…“Congressman DeSantis has been a leader on everything from reducing federal spending, trying to stop ObamaCare, and opposing Common Core. I’m confident that our members will be very excited to help him win in November.”

DeSantis is expected to corral the support of conservative grassroots organizations like the Club for Growth, Citizen’s United, as well many other organizations and political action committees, including former Ambassador John Bolton’s PAC.

Other Republicans strongly considering a run for Rubio’s Senate seat are Rep. Jeff Miller (R) and Florida Lt. Governor Carlos Lopez-Canter, who just so happens to be a close friend to Rubio.
