Video has emerged of a June 15 Poughkeepsie, NY, council meeting in which Democrat Councilman Joe Rich screamed and told a Second Amendment supporter to “Shut Up!”

The pro-Second Amendment citizens–comprised of members of the Shooter Committee on Political Education and others–attended the council meeting to oppose a proposed law requiring law-abiding gun owners to lock up their guns in the home.

During the meeting, Rich suggested opposition to the mandatory gun storage ordinance is socio-economic in nature. He said his experience has been that wealthy people keep their guns “under lock and key” in the home, because their guns are of value, while people who “have a gun, and are poor, generally don’t have them under lock and key because they didn’t think anyone would break into their” home.

Rich asked why the Second Amendment supporters bothered attending the meeting. He suggested they were not even from Poughkeepsie. He said, “I don’t want to see you… I really don’t. Go to your own city, your own town, and worry about them.”

When a pro-Second Amendment attendee spoke to up say he did in fact live in the area Rich screamed, “Quiet, you’re not recognized” followed by, “Shut up! You’re not recognized.” He went on to say he was tired of the “audience interrupting,” and he told the pro-Second Amendment attendee to “Shut Up!” once more.

Rich ultimately contended that pro-Second Amendment attendees did not want the law passed because “a successful law” would show that gun control works. BizPac Reivew quoted Rich as saying, “You don’t want them to work … that’s the truth. You’re here to make sure that these laws never get a chance to find out if they are going to work or not.”
