The Chicago city council is set to pass a new requirement that the city’s two major airports, O’Hare and Midway, must provide free breastfeeding rooms for the public.
The new rule, introduced by Alderman Ed Burke, would take effect in January of 2016 and, as Burke said, will make Chicago the “most breast-feeding friendly” city in America.
In fact, Burke claimed that if the rooms work well at the city’s airports, the city council might try to force the rule on a series of public spaces such as train stations. Burke also floated the idea that he may try to force every large building in the city to have such a room open to the public.
The new rule is expected to come to a vote sometime in September.
Illinois state legislators sent a similar bill to Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner in May. If the governor signs the bill, it will force all airports in the state to have breastfeeding rooms by 2017.
