The liberal media is attacking Ben Carson for his supposedly callous response to the Oregon shooting, in which he urged victims to aggressively attack a mass shooter.
“I would not just stand there and let him shoot me,” Carson said. “I would say, ‘Hey guys, everybody attack him. He may shoot me, but he can’t get us all.'”
Despite the media furor, Carson’s statement is exactly in line with the federal government’s official instructions for responding to an active shooter.
After the Newtown school shooting, President Obama tasked Vice President Joe Biden with leading a task force to develop gun control recommendations. As part of this messaging effort, the White House instructed the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI to develop new instructions to help people deal with active shooter situations.
A training video endorsed and promoted by the FBI depicts a team of office workers going into last resort mode: “commit to taking the shooter down.” (Watch 3:45 Mark Of This Video).
The Obama administration made clear that trying to “incapacitate” a shooter was fair game.
The Department of Homeland Security distributed posters and pocket cards with the three-step instructions. The government advises people to “Evacuate” and “Hide Out” as the first two steps. But if those things fail, the Obama administration wants people to do what Carson told them to do.
“Take action: As a last resort and only when your life is in imminent danger… Attempt to incapacitate the shooter… Act with physical aggression and throw items at the shooter,” according to DHS.
