Democratic House Minority Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi is going out of her way to praise Bernie Sanders for voting against the Clinton administration’s Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which defined marriage as one man and one woman.

“Bernie Sanders was my colleague in the House,” Pelosi said in a forum at George Washington University, noting that she has yet to endorse anyone in the Democratic race.

“We voted against DOMA, you know, against all of those things people are subjecting to scrutiny now. He’s fabulous, and he has a very important tonic for the country and for the Democratic Party because he has ideas.”

Hillary Clinton has been dogged by her previous support for her husband’s DOMA law. Then-senator Hillary Clinton defended the heterosexual definition of the “sacred bond” of marriage in a 2004 floor speech.
