Jonathan McConnell, 33-year-old former Marine captain and small business owner, is challenging Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL) for his Senate seat.

“The reason I’m running is because I love this country,” McConnell told Breitbart News Daily’s Stephen K. Bannon. “I’ve spent the last ten years roughly either at a Marine infantry officer, or fighting Islam on the private side. We are not winning this war. The country that I fought for over in Iraq is not the country that we have today.”

McConnell says that his message is resonating with the people of Alabama and that they’re tired of the status quo. He added that he was moved to run for office after becoming fed up with career politicians.

“I’m sick and tired of career politicians bankrupting this country and doing whats best for them, but not for the American people,” he said.

“Richard Shelby is a campaign conservative and Alabamians are not fooled. He has raised five percent of his money, in the last seven years,  has come from Alabama. Everything else has come from the Wall Street banks and the K street lobbyist in Washington, D.C.”
