The Archbishop of St. Louis says he is abolishing the Archdiocesan Catholic Committee on Girl Scouts and is asking local parishes that sponsor Girl Scout troops to consider ending their relationship with the Girl Scouts altogether.
Archbishop Robert Carlson takes dead aim at the Girl Scouts USA and the international World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) for their support and promotion of ideas in opposition to Catholic teachings including abortion, homosexuality, and transsexualism.
He points specifically to “WAGGG’s continued promotion of contraception and ‘abortion rights’ on behalf of its girl members, the majority of whom are minors.” Girls Scouts USA, the parent organization of U.S. scouting, is the largest financial contributor to WAGGGS.
Carlson also complained about GSUSA’s promotion of abortion icons Gloria Steinem, and Betty Friedan, along with Amnesty International, and Coalition for Adolescent Girls that also advocate for the killing of unborn children.
Carlson writes:
Girl Scouts is exhibiting a troubling pattern of behavior and it is clear to me that as they move in the ways of the world it is becoming increasingly incompatible with our Catholic values. We must stop and ask ourselves – is Girl Scouts concerned with the total well-being of our young women? Does it do a good job forming the spiritual, emotional, and personal well-being of Catholic girls?
He also warns the Boy Scouts about their recent acceptance of open homosexuals as Scouts and adult Scout leaders, “Concerns are also continuing to surface with Boy Scouts of America (BSA). While the new BSA leadership policy currently offers some protections to religious organizations, I continue to wonder in which direction this once trusted organization is now headed.”
Carlson is immediately disbanding the Catholic Committee on Girl Scouts and forming instead a Catholic Committee for Girls Formation. He is also each parish that hosts a Girl Scout troop to consider leaving the Girl Scouts and forming under another similar group like American Heritage Girls that was formed years ago as a response to the growing leftism of the Girl Scouts USA.
Breitbart News has reported for the past few years how the Girl Scouts have moved aggressively leftward. Though the group continues to insist it does not support controversial issues like abortion, contraception, homosexuality, and transsexualism, a growing number of moms, girls, and now Catholic leaders are no longer taking them at their word.
The Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri responded to Carlson’s move by once more denying they take any position on these controversial topics.
