Georgia Lt. Governor Casey Cagle (R) said he looks forward to attending the spring signing ceremony for campus carry legislation currently making its way through the state legislature.
The legislation, House Bill 859, is sponsored by Representatives Rick Jasperse (R-Jasper) and Mandi Ballinger (R-Canton) and allows concealed carry permit holders to carry their guns on campus for self-defense in the same way they carry their guns at Starbucks, Walmart, Kroger, McDonald’s, and any number of other businesses and locations they frequent. The bill only prohibits concealed carry in fraternity and sorority houses, dormitories, and athletic events.
Breitbart News reported that Cagle’s office declined to give comment on the campus carry legislation when it passed the Georgia House last week, and concerns arose that he might torpedo the bill in the Senate. But Cagle has now made clear that he supports HB 859 and will be in attendance when Governor Nathan Deal (R) signs the bill.
According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Cagle assured Georgians that HB 859 will receive no opposition from him as it moves through the Georgia Senate. Moreover, Cagle said, “I look forward to being at the governor’s signing ceremony for the gun bill.”
Also on Monday, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America held a rally against HB 859. The group claimed allowing guns on campus for self-defense is not “justice” and creates a dangerous situation. Governor Deal brushed off the campus carry criticism as the same “hype” the state heard against concealed carry years ago.
