According to police, an 18-year-old gunman who opened fire on prom attendees died shortly afterward from wounds received via police gunfire.

The prom shooting occurred in Antigo, Wisconsin.

According to the Associated Press, police say an 18-year-old opened fire on prom attendees as they exited the building in which the April 23 event was held. Two students were wounded by the gunman, but police did not release their identities.

Antigo police chief Eric Roller said officers heard the gunfire and “immediately fired upon the shooter, stopping the threat.” The gunman died shortly thereafter at Wausau hospital.

Police did not say whether the two wounded students were specifically targeted or whether they were shot at random.
