A former student at Wheaton College has been arrested and accused of hiding “spy cameras” inside the bathroom of the college dorm room of three female students and using the cameras to record the women showering and using the bathroom.
Authorities in the Chicago suburb arrested Alexander Lim, 25, and charged him with six counts of making unauthorized videos of the female students. Lim admitted guilty to the counts so as to receive a plea deal with the Du Page County prosecutor’s office. Lim could face up to five years in prison, although the unannounced plea deal is expected to reduce his sentence.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Lim knew the women and had hidden the cameras in their dorm rooms when he was there visiting.
Lim, a Singapore national, had been expelled from the college in 2015.
“The actions that Mr. Lim is accused of would be a violation of College policies and the Community Covenant we agree to live by,” Wheaton College VP for Student Development Paul Chelsen said in a statement released in February. “We are eager to comply with the authorities investigating this matter, and will provide ongoing care to everyone affected by this situation.”
The foreign student admitted to police that he had been recording the women since last October after he was arrested when one of the students discovered the camera in her bathroom. Lim even posted some of the video online, police discovered.
Lim also has a history of sexual problems, having been in Sex Addicts Anonymous and completing a program for people with compulsive disorders.
The incident prompted the college to launch a review of security measures for its dorms, but later authorities determined that their policies were not at fault and no changes were announced.
“We are confident our current security systems and policies related to security in campus-owned apartments are functioning effectively,” College spokeswoman LaTonya Taylor said.
Charged with a Class 4 felony, the former student’s bond was set at $75,000.
