Vice President Joe Biden seems disappointed by the news that the United Kingdom has voted to leave the European Union, but signaled respect for the electoral results.

“I must say we preferred a different outcome … but as the United States having a long standing friendship with the United Kingdom, one of the world’s great democracies, we fully respect the decision they have made,” Biden said during a speech at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland.

Biden assured attendees at his speech that the United States would continue the special relationship with Britain, in spite of their vote.

“America’s special bond with the United Kingdom runs deep and will endure,” he said.

But he also signaled support for the European Union — which will likely be crippled by the British exit.

“Our relationship with Ireland and the European Union will remain the cornerstone of our global engagement,” he said.
