A mother in Katy, Texas, Christy Sheats called a “family meeting” for June 24, then shot both her daughters with a revolver in the family’s living room.

Christy Sheats’ daughters, 22-year-old Taylor and 17-year-old Madison, tried to escape, but did not survive. Madison “collapsed and died” from her original wounds, while the mother chased down Taylor, shooting again until fatally wounding her.

According to NBC News, the father, 45-year-old Jason Sheats, also attended the “family meeting,” but fled quickly once the mother began shooting. He got far enough away to escape danger.

KPRC reports that police arrived on scene to find the mother standing over Madison and Taylor, both of whom were lying in the street, and they could hear the father saying, “Don’t do this. They’re our kids.”

Police ordered the mother to drop her .38 revolver, then shot her dead when she refused to comply.

A Sheats family member from Alabama responded to the shooting by pointing out that the mother was allegedly supposed to marry a boyfriend on June 27. But KPRC reports that it is unclear whether the “family meeting” had anything to do with the pending wedding.

June 24 was Jason Sheats’ birthday.
