The Vermont Mayor’s Coalition (VMC) is pushing for an expansion of background checks in their state less than three weeks after Omar Mateen killed 49 people in Orlando with guns he acquired via a background check.
The coalition of mayors consists of eight mayors from around Vermont.
According to NECN, the VMC is “urging the state to enact legislation to require universal background checks for anyone purchasing a gun in Vermont following the mass shooting at an Orlando nightclub.” They are also asking “the state to create a notification system to alert local law enforcement when prohibited individuals try to purchase firearms.”
Neither of these controls would have stopped the Orlando shooting, as Mateen passed a background check for his firearms, including a state-mandated three-day waiting period for his handgun. Moreover, he was not on a prohibited buyers list and therefore would not have triggered a notification by trying to buy a gun.
The VMC began pushing for new gun controls after the heinous December 2012 attack on Sandy Hook Elementary. None of their suggested gun controls would have stopped that attack either, as the gunman — Adam Lanza — stole his guns, thereby bypassing any and all gun controls.
