A recent poll shows that millennials support gun control at a lower level than other age demographics Women 18-35, in particular, view a defense of gun rights and abortion rights as their number one issue.

The report is based on interviews and an aggregation of recent polls.

According to NBC News, Gallup polls conducted within last 12 months show that support for gun control among millennials runs lower than among other age demographics. Gallup editor-in-chief Frank Newport said, “Millennials are … less interested in gun control than those who are older, so the data suggests it’s unlike a number of other attitudes say like, gay marriage where young people are much more liberal. We did not see that in our data on guns.”

And an ABC News/Refinery 29 poll in incorporated into the report as well. It shows that “women age 18-35 list gun rights as the most important issue in this election,” together with abortion.

NBC News also interviewed a 24-year-old millennial named Ryan Bradley, who explained his experience of being robbed at gunpoint when unarmed. He said that looking at the gun in the assailant’s hand convinced him that the assailant would have a gun regardless of how many laws were passed. Bradley emerged from that experience a gun rights advocate who offers to take pro-gun control millennials to the gun range to familiarize them with firearms, and after shooting together he is willing to sit down and discuss gun control with them (if they still support it).

Bradley says the key is to get people to understand that gun rights are not about feelings or emotions, but about rights that require a rationale defense. He said:

We’re talking about a fundamental right, we’re talking about the Second Amendment which is a guaranteed right to self-defense. Feelings don’t belong. I don’t think that somebody should be using derogatory language to somebody but they have the First Amendment right to do so and nobody’s talking about taking that First Amendment right away. So I think that gun control supporters need to bring something more to the table than just feelings.
