On August 18, Under Armour confirmed they were ending sponsorship of Sarah Bowmar, wife of Josh Bowmar, the American hunter who recently made news by killing a black bear with a spear in Alberta.
Breitbart News reported that Josh Bowmar affixed a GoPro camera to a spear and videoed himself hunting bear in dense wilderness in northern Alberta. The Edmonton Journal reported that Alberta officials condemned Bowmar’s hunt on August 15, describing it as “archaic” and “unacceptable.” And they “asked fish and wildlife officers” to investigate details of the hunt to see if Bowmar did anything illegal.

Bowmar responded to criticism by arguing that he had done nothing wrong and that no part of the part of the bear would go waste. But his wife’s cameo at the end of the now banned hunting video triggered Under Armour to drop their sponsorship of her.
According to Reuters, Under Armour spokesperson Danielle Daly used email to say the company is “dedicated to the hunting community.” But she condemned hunting with a spear, saying, “The method used to harvest this animal was reckless and we do not condone it.” Sarah Bowmar responded to the severed sponsorship, saying, “Under Armour and the Bowmars broke up today. I’ll do a blog post in a few days when I am no longer crying.” She added, “At least I can wear my lulu leggings again.”
Spear hunting is legal in certain parts of Canada. The Washington Post reports that Alberta officials plan to ban spear hunting.
