Police say a Walmart employee with a concealed carry permit shot and killed an armed man, foiling an “attempted robbery” on Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred during the early morning hours of the nightshift at a Walmart in Sunrise, Florida.

According to the Sun Sentinel, Sunrise Police Officer Chris Piper said the Walmart employee–who is believed to “have gone out to his car during a break”–was approached by a man armed with a handgun. Piper said the suspect pointed the gun at the employee, words were exchanged, then the employee pulled his own gun and fired “multiple rounds.” The suspect was killed.

Piper stressed that the employee “has a permit” to carry a gun.

ABC 10 News reports that the armed Walmart employee is 28-year-old Ervin Jones. He has only worked at Walmart “a few months” and has to provide for a son.

Jones’ sister said, “I’m sorry to hear what happened to the victim, but my brother works hard … to take care of him and his child.”
