A 19-year-old Houston man was shot in the face when caught allegedly breaking into an SUV following the theft of a Bible from another vehicle earlier in the night.

The 19-year-old was shot in the face in the Ridgemont neighborhood around 3:30 a.m.

According to KTRK, police noted a string of thefts in the neighborhood and believe all of them were carried out by three individuals, the 19-year-old being one of them. In some of the earliest burglaries of the night, a Bible was stolen out of one man’s vehicle and a wallet was taken from a woman’s minivan. In both cases, papers and items from the vehicles consoles and glove compartments were strewn across the seats.

Nicole — the owner of the minivan — said the thieves took her wallet but overlooked her handgun and her iPad.

One neighborhood resident “near the corner of Hiram Clarke Rod and Ridgerod Lane” heard his dog barking around 3:30 a.m. and went outside to investigate. When he got to his driveway, police said, “three men were breaking into his Tahoe,” and “the homeowner shot one of them in the face.”

KTRK reports that the suspect who was shot is 19 years old and has undergone surgery. The other two suspects fled the scene and are still at large.
