A dog that was once rescued from an abusive owner is being hailed as a hero for leading its new owner to a ditch where a near-naked three-year-old child was found shivering in the freezing Michigan weather last week.

The new owner of Peanut the dog reported that the pup was running through the house and barking in an attempt to get some attention. Once the dog was allowed outside, he made a beeline to a ditch several yards behind the house, according to MLive.com.

The incident occurred on March 17 in a rural area near Rapid River in Northern Michigan’s Delta County.

The dog’s owner was concerned over Peanut’s purposeful run toward the ditch and followed the dog. Once there, the owner discovered a three-year-old girl wearing only a sweatshirt and on the edge of death from exposure to the elements.

“My husband followed her and to his surprise, he found a naked, shivering, 3-year-old girl curled up in a ball barely alive,” the dog’s owner noted.

The couple called the police, and after a canvass of the area, officers of the Delta County sheriff’s office found the child’s parents in a nearby home. Child Protective Services quickly became involved when police discovered another child in an “unsafe and unsanitary” home. The two children were taken into custody.

Temperatures in the area were around freezing at the time Peanut discovered the child in the ditch.
