Police have arrested and charged an Indiana man whom they say raped and impregnated a ten-year-old girl.
According to investigators, Nicholas Deon Thrash, 34, was living in the home of the victim’s mother and was someone nearly everyone in the family trusted, ABC reported.
Thrash had been living with the child’s mother for nearly two years as the two carried on a relationship. But police identified another local woman who also thought she was in a relationship with the suspect. Police found Thrash at the second woman’s home after a warrant for his arrest was filed.
The victim’s grandmother said she met Thrash many times and was surprised by the arrest.
“He’s not the type of person that you’d think would do something like this,” the grandmother said. “We invited him into our home. He helped my husband all he could,” she added.
The child’s life has been upended by the molestation, the grandmother also told the media.
“She came out and asked, ‘Can I get my Barbies?’ I said, ‘Of course you can.’ She is still a little girl that wants to play that has to grow up overnight,” the grandmother said.
The family urged others to pay attention to what their children talk about and keep a wary eye on adults who seem to want to spend too much time with a child.
The child’s 32-year-old mother was also arrested. She was charged on two counts of felony neglect of a child and is being held on a $100,005 cash bond.
Thrash now faces ten counts of child molestation.
