President Donald Trump has officially selected former House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s wife Callista Gingrich as Ambassador to the Vatican, according to a release from the White House.

Reports noted weeks ago that Gingrich would be the likely choice, ahead of Trump’s visit to the Vatican, but the official announcement was held until Thursday. Her nomination will have to be confirmed by the Senate.

Callista Gingrich is Newt’s third wife, a lifelong Catholic who ultimately influenced Gingrich’s conversion to the Catholic Church. The couple will move to Rome to serve in their new position. According to reports, Newt Gingrich will still appear on television as a Trump surrogate via a satellite link.

The Gingrichs have maintained a keen interest in the papacy, producing a documentary about the late Pope John Paul II and his fight against communism.
