With an estimated 20 Colorado school districts allowing armed teachers and teachers from other districts to be trained to carry now, Ceasefire Colorado’s Eileen McCarron suggests teachers should be disarmed because police miss their targets 4 out of 5 times.
Colorado allows teachers to carry on campus as long as they undergo training which enables them to be designated. McCarron has been working to all year to slow the momentum behind arming teachers for self-defense.
On February 24, 2017, McCarron even spoke to a cardboard cutout of Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO), asking the cutout what it “[would] do to stop NRA’s effort to put guns in our children’s schools.”

Gun controllers criticize the NRA for responding to attacks in gun-free zones by seeking to abolish the gun-free designation and allowing teachers and staff to be armed to shoot back. NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre famously said, “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” The truth of this maxim played out in front of the nation’s eyes in Alexandria on June 14 when good guys with guns took out a bad guy with evil intentions.
On June 26, Breitbart News reported that teachers in rural Colorado school districts were getting qualified to carry guns for self-defense. Some of these districts are so far out that police response time is 30 minutes. The Sandy Hook Elementary attacker had just over nine minutes without armed response, and he was able to kill 26 innocents; think of what a determined attacker with 30 minutes could do.
But The Denver Post reports that Ceasefire Colorado’s McCarron is against letting the teachers carry guns for self-defense. She tries to justify her opposition to armed teachers by claiming police miss one out of five shots. Her point — forced though it seems — is that well-trained police often miss, so how can we expect less-trained teachers to hit their target?
McCarron misses two important points: 1. Law-abiding Americans with no training stop bad guys with guns on a daily basis. Americans do not have to be trained to be free; they were born to be so. 2. Teachers and students deserve a fighting chance, and in a scenario where police response is up to 30 minutes, they sometimes do not have a chance without a gun.
The state of Colorado has had campus carry for college and university campuses since 2003. Where is one example of McCarron’s carnage? Or a concealed carry permit holder harming someone or carrying out a high-profile shooting? There is not such an example, and this is because campus carry — like concealed carry — does not lead to crime. Rather, it discourages it.
