Early Tuesday morning red graffiti was found on a pillar of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
The paint appeared to read “F**k law” in a photo provided by the National Park Service according to NBC4 News. The NPS said it was found around 4:30 a.m. As of Tuesday afternoon the NPS had communicated that careful cleanup efforts were in progress. A mild gel substance is being used and rinsed as those removing the paint strive to protect the stone.
In February the NPS revealed efforts to “remove five acts of vandalism to memorials along the National Mall, including two instances at the Lincoln Memorial, and one each at the Washington Monument, World War II Memorial and D.C. War Memorial.”
Those instances did not involve paint, but rather what the NPS described as permanent marker.
The NPS had stated of the previous cases, “The vandalism does not appear to be racially or politically motivated.”
The technique being used to remove the paint sounds similar to that described in the previous removal efforts.
The NPS has asked the public to contact the United States Park Police at 202-610-7515 with any information about the act of vandalism.
