Former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore earned a key endorsement on Saturday in his bid for the GOP’s nod in the Alabama U.S. Senate special election.
State Sen. Trip Pittman (R-Montrose) formally endorsed Moore at the Alabama Republican Party’s summer meeting held in Troy, AL at Troy University’s Trojan Arena.
Pittman was a candidate in the Republican primary held earlier this month in Alabama but fell short of the runoff that will feature Moore and Sen. Luther Strange (R-AL).
Although Pittman finished fourth with a little less than 7 percent of the overall primary vote, he had a strong showing in Alabama’s two southwest-most counties, Mobile and Baldwin, which are also the second-most and sixth-most populous counties in the state. Of those two counties, Baldwin County was one of the five counties Strange won outright in the August 15 primary.
“Judge Moore and I both believe in limited government and fiscal responsibility, and I am pleased to support him,” Pittman said in a statement. “Judge Moore has run a great campaign, and I firmly believe he’s the best choice for Alabama. If the people of Alabama want a Senator who will go to Washington and stand up to the establishment by working to end out-of-control government, excessive regulations and address the devastating impact Obamacare has had on our families and the economy, we need to elect Roy Moore.”
Moore acknowledged Pittman’s endorsement in the press release and emphasized economic growth and fiscal responsibility.
“I’m grateful to have the support of a strong and principled leader like Trip Pittman,” Moore said. “At the state level, he has worked hard to make sure Alabama lives within our means. That’s exactly what I plan to do in the U.S. Senate, and I look forward to working with him and other leaders in the Legislature to promote the kind of robust economic growth that government fiscal responsibility fosters.”
