A Marysville, Washington, homeowner threw open his door, pushed forward his firearm, and held a wanted man at gunpoint for police early Monday morning.
According to Q13 News, homeowner Joe Hemrich spotted a man holding a “baton” and standing outside of his child’s bedroom window. He then drew his handgun, confronted the man, and told him to put his hands in the air, according to surveillance video.
Hemrich said he has carried a gun for 12 years, but this is the first time he has actually had to pull it. He said, “This the first time in my life it has ever come out of a holster, when I wasn’t at a range. I train so I know exactly where it is, exactly how to pull it out, whether my finger is going on the trigger.”
He added, “I carry a firearm to protect myself, my family, my community with the intentions of never having to use it”:
Five minutes passed between the time Hemrich pulled his gun and the arrival of the police. Hemrich called it “the longest five minutes of his life,” according to Q13 News.
Marysville police praised Hemrich’s actions, saying that “he did everything right” when confronting the wanted man, who proved to be “a 23-year-old transient with four warrants for his arrest.”
