A concealed permit holder in Detroit, Michigan, returned fire and killed one of two armed suspects who allegedly ambushed him at a gas station Saturday.

Police labelled the shooting an act of self-defense.

According to the Detroit News, the concealed permit holder pulled into a gas station just after midnight and two masked suspects came out from the behind the station and opened fire. The permit holder responded by shooting back, killing one of the two suspects.

The dead suspect is simply being described as in his “early 20s.” The permit holder is in his 20s as well.

The second suspect—who is described as “a black male wearing all black”—managed to escape. Police did not speculate on whether the surviving suspect was shot by the permit holder as well.

Police are seeking the second suspect and asking “anyone with information on the suspects or the shooting to call Crime Stoppers of Michigan at 800-SPEAK-UP.”

On August 22, 2015, Breitbart News reported that Detroit police chief James Craig encouraged citizens to get their concealed carry permits and stressed that concealed carry is part of fighting crime. Political Vel Craft quoted Craig saying, “The message should be that, you know, people are going to protect themselves. They’re tired, they’ve been dealing with this epidemic of violence, they’re afraid and they have a right to protect themselves.”
