One day after Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) endorsed former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore for U.S. Senate, Cruz’s Texas colleague Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn followed suit and endorsed Moore as well.
Cornyn, who backed Moore’s competitor Luther Strange in last month’s Republican primary runoff, urged Alabama voters to support the candidate that would follow in the “footsteps” of Jeff Sessions, who held the seat until assuming office as Attorney General this year.
“Alabamians will soon elect a new U.S. Senator and I hope they will vote for the candidate who will follow in former Senator Sessions’ footsteps as a tireless advocate led by principle rather than politics,” Cornyn said in a statement released by the Moore campaign. “That is why I am proud to offer my support to Judge Roy Moore for U.S. Senate. I look forward to working with him to pass legislation that will effect meaningful change for all Americans.”
Cornyn’s endorsement is significant given his role in the leadership among U.S. Senate Republicans. Immediately following Moore’s primary win, Cornyn told The Hill his party needed to learn from Strange’s loss.
Moore welcomed Cornyn’s endorsement and said he looked forward to working with him on critical issues.
“I appreciate Senator Cornyn’s endorsement and I look forward to working with him in the U.S. Senate on ideas to strengthen the military, cut taxes on American families and businesses, reduce government spending, and protect the sanctity of life,” Moore added in the statement.
Moore faces Democratic Party nominee former Clinton U.S. Attorney Doug Jones for the U.S. Senate seat on December 12.
