Authorities arrested a North Carolina air traffic controller Friday for allegedly acquiring a weapon of mass destruction.
Officials told WRAL that Paul George Dandan, 30, possessed a homemade pipe bomb built by his 39-year-old roommate, Derrick Fells.
Authorities say Fells told detectives that he built the bomb with the intent of using it against a neighbor but changed his mind and handed it over to Dandan.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say they found the bomb at Dandan’s house in Charlotte last week and arrested him on Friday, according to the New York Daily News.
Police charged Dandan with possessing, acquiring, and transporting a weapon of mass destruction. They also charged Fells with manufacturing and possessing a weapon of mass destruction.
The Federal Aviation Administration released a statement shortly after Dandan’s arrest, saying that he had been fired and that he would no longer be able to access any terminals or restricted areas within the airport.
The Associated Press reports that the Federal Bureau of Investigation is assisting local police with the investigation but does not expect to file federal charges against Dandan at this point.
The FBI says that Dandan is being held on $45,000 bond in the Mecklenburg County Jail.
