On November 13 Texas GOP Vote reported Sen. John Cornyn’s (R-TX) announced he was ready to work with “[his] colleague from Connecticut” in pursuit of new gun legislation. On November 15 Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) hinted that a bipartisan “breakthrough on gun legislation” is “super close.”
Following the Texas church attack, the Washington Times reported that Cornyn was one of a small number of Republicans believing “there is room for a limited gun control debate.” Nearly a week later, Texas GOP Vote shared a letter from Cornyn in which he expressed his “plan to introduce legislation” and his willingness “to work with my colleague from Connecticut.”
Although Cornyn never mentioned his “colleague” by name, there are only two possibilities from Connecticut—Sen. Murphy and Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), both of whom are pro-gun control to the core. Of the two, Murphy is currently leading the charge for numerous gun laws in the Senate, including a ban on bump stocks and “assault weapons.” Cornyn has made clear his openness to a hearing on bump stocks.
