The U.S. Navy has confirmed that a black sailor who claimed his bunk was vandalized aboard a Navy warship faked the incident to create an Internet hoax.

Twenty-seven-year-old seaman Marquie Little posted photos to Facebook on November 15 claiming that his bunk area aboard the carrier George H.W. Bush had been vandalized with trash and had “racist” slogans left there, according to WTKR News.

“I proudly serve the Navy and this is what I’m receiving in return,” Little wrote on his Facebook post.

The sailor created a hashtag to flag his story on social media, writing “#SailorAskingForHelp things are getting out of hand. Please share. Somebody knows something.”

Little even gave interviews to the media lamenting the incident aboard ship and claiming that he felt “unsafe” at his duties.

“Maybe the guy or guys that vandalized my rack would see me out in town,” he exclaimed. “I constantly have to look who’s giving me the side eye.”

But this week, the Navy reported that an investigation revealed mounting inconsistencies in the seaman’s account of the vandalism, the Navy Times reported.

“An NCIS-supported command investigation following claims of racially-motivated vandalism aboard the (carrier) has determined that the alleged victim staged the incident himself,” Cmdr. Dave Hecht said in a statement on Friday.

“The United States Navy does not tolerate racial discrimination of any form and the well-being of our Sailors is our top priority,” Hecht added.

The commander also reported that the sailor had “received appropriate administrative actions and additional counseling and training” but would not be dismissed from the service for the incident.

For his part, seaman Little insisted that the investigation was flawed and maintained his innocence.

“And now I’m to be here looking like a bad guy for attention,” Little wrote in a text message sent to the Navy Times. “I have nothing to gain from doing such an incident but I have everything to lose.”
