Australia’s Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump later this month, the White House has confirmed. The visit between the two leaders will take place on February 23.
Mr. Trump is looking forward to further enhancing the long-standing partnership with Australia that has endured two world wars as well as conflicts in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan.
“The leaders will celebrate 100 years of mateship through war, peace, and prosperity, charting the course for the coming century of partnership,” the White House said in a statement.
“The President and Prime Minister will discuss a range of shared bilateral, regional, and global priorities, including fighting terrorism, promoting economic growth, and expanding security and defence cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.”
Mr. Trump’s relationship with the Australian leader Turnbull got off to a bumpy beginning in a tense first conversation over the phone where Mr. Trump bemoaned an Obama-era refugee resettlement deal that took 1,250 Middle Eastern refugees off Australia’s hands.
In the end, Mr Trump decided to honour the agreement.
Mr. Trump and Mr. Turnbull apparently smoothed over their differences in a face-to-face meeting in New York in May, with the president declaring they “get along great”.
The pair last met in November on the sidelines of a summit of East and Southeast Asian leaders in Manila.
More recently Mr. Turnbull congratulated Mr. Trump on his first year in office.
As Breitbart News reported, Mr. Trump’s sweeping tax cuts combined with reforms in corporate regulation are benefiting the global economy, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said.
Speaking during a radio interview, Mr. Turnbull happily declared: “Donald Trump is delivering on economic leadership, that’s for sure” before outlining his own close personal relationship with the president.
