During the February 21 airing of Your World with Neil Cavuto, former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer said part of the solution to school shootings is “tougher background checks to limit the number of people who can get guns.”

Fleischer addressed violence in schools and began by saying the solution “doesn’t have to involve gun control.”

He then suggested a number of gun controls, including raising the legal age for long gun purchases from 18 years old to 21.

He added, “I think the issue that’s really going to test us is going to be how far do we violate people’s civil liberties if there’s been any involvement in mental illness issues. At what point do we say, ‘You have a restraining order, you cannot have a weapon.’ I think we have to push in that direction.”

Cavuto opined that many families, including the students who are protesting for gun control, will not be happy with anything less than a change in current laws via gun control.

Fleischer responded, “Gun laws will be affected. The things I’m talking about change your ability to get a gun. That’s the core of the issue here, and tougher background checks as well to limit the number of people who can get guns.”
