Sen. Patrick Toomey (R-PA) is hopeful he and his Senate colleagues can secure gun control in the wake of the February 14 Florida school shooting.

The gunman in the school shooting passed a background check to acquire his firearm and Toomey hopes there is enough gun control support to force every would-be gun purchaser, retail or private, to pass a background check as well.

The Washington Post quoted Toomey saying, “It does feel like we have a shot at getting a little bit of momentum on background checks.”

Toomey partnered with Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) to push expanded background checks in the wake of the December 14, 2012, attack on Sandy Hook Elementary School. As with the Florida school shooting, an expansion of background checks would not have prevent the Sandy Hook attack from occurring. This is because the Sandy Hook attacker stole his guns, thereby circumventing all gun controls.

Ironically, Sen. Manchin admitted expanded background checks would not have prevented the Sandy Hook attack. He said this even as he and Toomey were pushing such checks in the wake of the heinous incident.
