Rep. Luke Messer (R-IN) is praising President Donald Trump for his tough stance toward the Communist regime in North Korea, including a strategy that led dictator Kim Jong Un to ask to meet with the United States about curtailing its nuclear weapons program.

“If North Korea actually disarms its nuclear program President Trump should get a Nobel Peace Prize,” Messer said in an interview on Breitbart News Saturday with Washington Political Editor Matthew Boyle and Deputy Political Editor Amanda House on SiriusXM Patriot 125.

Messer, who is challenging Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-IN) for his Senate seat, noted the contrast between Trump and President Barack Obama. Obama was given the prize without taking any concrete actions to promote peace ahead of getting the award, Messer said.

Under the Trump presidency, North Korea seems to have had a change of heart, Messer said.

“The fact that they are even coming to the table to talk is the result of one thing — President Trump’s strong posture demonstrating peace through strength,” Messer said.

Messer was instrumental in helping the Trump administration put in place the toughest sanctions ever imposed on North Korea, and he told Breitbart News that this is part of his winning policy.

“It’s more than just rhetoric, it’s more than just tweets, it is strong sanctions directed toward this administration,” Messer said, noting that Democrat Donnelly criticized Trump on the Senate floor recently for what he said was a foreign policy stance toward North Korea that is dangerous for the United States to take.

While Messer acknowledges that the U.S. still has a “long way to go” when it comes to ending the North Korean threat, he credits the president for the progress made so far.

“Peace through strength is working, and this president should be praised,” Messer said.

And when asked what the president should bring to the table if he meets with Kim, Messer said he has confidence that Trump will do the right thing.

So far, Messer said, Trump’s strategy has been “remarkable and really is a testament to his leadership.”
