Financial officer Anita Britt resigned her position at St. Thomas University rather than sever her relationship with American Outdoor Brands Corporation, the parent company of Smith & Wesson.
Britt is on the board of trustees for American Outdoor Brands.
The Washington Times reports that Britt faced mounting pressure following the February 14 Florida school shooting, as the tragedy occurred “just 40 miles away from St. Thomas.” The university president, Rev. Monsignor Franklyn M. Casale, said he feared the university was being “associated with gun violence” because of Britt’s relationship with American Outdoor Brands, therefore he gave her an ultimatum.
Casale said, “I advised Ms. Britt that she needed to make a choice of either resigning her role on American Outdoor Brands, or her role as CFO at St. Thomas University, but that she could not continue on both.”
Britt responded by letting Casale know she would be resigning her position at the university.
