President Donald Trump is already looking past the comprehensive immigration bill drafted by House Speaker Paul Ryan, preparing to support a more narrow bill to help end the border crisis.

An administration official speaking to Bloomberg News said that although Trump would prefer passage of Ryan’s bill or the more conservative bill offered by Rep. Bob Goodlatte, he was expected to support a bill afterward that would deal with family separations at the border.

Both bills offer amnesty to over 1.8 illegal immigrants brought to the country as children in exchange for security reforms.

The president met with House Republicans on Tuesday evening and expressed his support for both bills, but many House Republicans are conceding that both bills will fail.

An official speaking to Fox News suggested that Trump is looking at issuing an executive order to allow families to be detained together.

White House Director of Legislative Affairs Marc Short did not respond to a request for comment.

Both bills are scheduled for a vote on Thursday.
