Left-wing Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum (D) has a five-point lead over Rep. Ron DeSantis (R) in Florida’s gubernatorial contest, according to a liberal Public Policy Polling (PPP) poll released on Thursday.
In the first poll conducted after Gillum and DeSantis won their respective gubernatorial primaries on Tuesday evening, PPP’s poll, conducted August 29-30, found Gillum leading DeSantis 48% to 43%. Nine percent of those surveyed were “not sure.”
Of those surveyed, 41% were Democrats and 41% were Republicans while 18% were independents. Forty-seven percent of those surveyed voted for President Donald Trump in 2016 while 46% voted for Hillary Clinton. Another seven percent did not vote or voted for someone else. Forty-six percent of those surveyed approved of Trump’s job performance while 49% disapproved.
In the 2016 election, Trump, who has strongly backed DeSantis, carried Florida and won the Sunshine State’s 29 electoral votes with 48.6% of the vote to Clinton’s 47.4%.
Women made up 53% of those surveyed PPP’s poll, and 47% were men. Sixty-eight percent of those surveyed were white while Hispanics and African-Americans respectively made up 13% and 15% of the sample.
In addition, 32% of those surveyed were older than 65 years of age; 48% were 45 to 65 years of age; 20% were 18 to 45 years of age.
PPP surveyed 743 voters, and the poll’s margin of error is +/- four percentage points.
