Judd Apatow, the producer of some of the biggest comedy hits from the last decade, isn’t laughing about “The Innocence of Muslims.”
The crude video inflamed Muslims across the Middle East and was temporarily blamed by the Obama administration for the death of four Americans in Benghazi. It also led to the filmmaker behind the movie getting arrested and subsequent imprisoned on unrelated charges.
Apatow discussed the film with The Hollywood Reporter along with a group of fellow industry scribes. Apatow’s takeaway – the film is essentially like yelling “fire” in a theater.
It’s meant to incite a riot, so it’s not really a creative endeavor. It’s like picketing outside a funeral.
The reporter didn’t as the logical follow-up questions to Apatow and his peer group – was the administration right to ask Web sites to remove the video, and did the filmmaker deserved to be harassed by law enforcement for the act of making a movie?
