Rapper Rick Ross may not be as fit as other stars in the Reebok endorsement galaxy, but a group dedicated to defeating sexism doesn’t care about the rapper’s waistline.
The group UltraViolet will protest the athletic company’s New York City location tomorrow, April 4, for embracing a rap star whose song U.O.E.N.O. features lyrics that appear to depict a woman being drugged and raped.
Here are the lyrics in question according to BET:
“Put Molly all in her champagne/ She ain’t even know it/ I took her home and I enjoyed that/ She ain’t even know it,” raps Rozay. Molly, of course, is the crystal form of MDMA often used to enhance sexuality and sometimes considered a “date rape” drug.
UltraViolet will hand deliver a petition with more than 70,000 signatures to the company’s flagship location demanding Reebok fire Ross.
“In remaining silent, Reebok is using its brand to promote rape,” said Nita Chaudhary, co-founder of UltraViolet, in a statement. “Reebok and Rick Ross have crossed a line–not only does Ross brag about drugging and raping a woman, he is pushing the idea that if you don’t use the word ‘rape’ it doesn’t count. We are fed up and disgusted with Reebok, and Thursday we will bring this fight to their front steps.”
Ross denies the charges, saying his lyrics are being misunderstood.
“I want to make it clear that woman is the most precious gift known to man,” says Rozay. “There was some misinterpretation of the lyric. I would never use the term ‘rape,’ I wouldn’t say that. Nobody condones that. I just want to reach out to all the queens, all the beautiful ladies, all the sexy ladies that have reached out to me because of the misunderstanding, and say we don’t condone that.”
