President Barack Obama can take some time out from golf and go see a movie soon.
The early 1990s environmental cartoon Captain Planet and the Planeteers is heading for feature film territory.
Sony Pictures appears to be negotiating for the rights to the series, which originally was about five teenagers from five different continents: North America, Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia and South America. They were empowered by Gaia, the earth spirit, to save the planet from the evil polluters who meant to destroy it.
Captain Planet showed up when the combined power of the five teenagers was not sufficient for the job. The Captain and the Planeteers had arch-foes Dr. Blight, Verminous Skumm, Duke Nukem and Looten Plunder. The show was successful enough to recruit stars such as Sting, Meg Ryan and James Coburn to voice the villains.
The show was originally produced by Turner Broadcasting along with DIC Entertainment, the company that produced Inspector Gadget and The Real Ghostbusters. Mark Gordon, Don Murphy and Susan Montford will produce with Andrea Giannetti running the show from Sony. Gordon is the exec producer of Grey’s Anatomy and Criminal Minds while Murphy was a producer of The Transformers.
