Box Office Predictions: 'Gravity' Stays No. 1, 'Fifth Estate' Bombs

Box Office Predictions: 'Gravity' Stays No. 1, 'Fifth Estate' Bombs

So much for the October frame being less than stellar. A true blockbuster is set to fight off all new releases this weekend, and that’s just the start of the interesting turns.

Sensei’s weekend predictions and revenue results are as follows:

1. “Gravity” ($31 million) – Hopefully the film industry is paying attention to this solid blockbuster. Instead of putting out films meant to lecture film goers, Gravity is bringing back old school sci-fi thrills (without the political commentary). Its astounding effects are sealing the deal. Look for an easy break of the $170 million mark, an astounding box office number in only three weeks of release.

2. “Carrie” ($25 million)  In reality, horror remakes may not be where the money is. Original horror projects like The Conjuring, and Insidious Chapter 2 are doing incredibly well, and seem to be where the genre is at its strongest. In light of this, look for only an Evil Dead (2013) like start.

3. “Captain Phillips” ($18 million)– The box office frame is really strong right now, so look for this Tom Hanks drama to pull in another solid weekend.

4. “Escape Plan” ($10.2 million) – Film looks fun, and the concept is enough of a throwback to grab those elusive action audiences. Sylvester Stallone should be able to open stronger than his Bullet To The Head and its $4.5 million opening. Arnold Schwarzenegger may also be able to put The Last Stand ($6 million opening) behind him. Both opened earlier this year.

5. “Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2” ($9 million) – This kiddie flick should break the $90 million domestic mark. This sequel remains behind its original’s box office pace, but still not by much.

In other calls:

Look for The Fifth Estate to flop with only around $3.8 million. Honestly, the film looks way too caught up in itself to be entertaining.

Those are Sensei’s calls. Enjoy the weekend.
