Macklemore Cites Trayvon Martin Case While Accepting AMA Award

Rapper Macklemore turned his acceptance speech at Sunday night’s American Music Awards telecast into a plea against racial profiling.

In doing so, he summoned a controversial case which many on the left interpreted as yet another sign of racial bigotry–the death of Trayvon Martin. The rapper appeared via satellite to accept the award for favorite rap/hip-hop album when he tried to connect his current location to the death of a Florida teen.

Due to the fact that we are in Florida tonight accepting this award I want to acknowledge Trayvon Martin and the hundreds and hundreds of kids each year that are dying due to racial profiling and the violence that follows it,” he said. “This is really happening. These are our friends, our neighbors, our peers and our fans, and it’s time that we look out for the youth and fight against racism and the laws that protect it.
