Elton John: Russian Anti-gay Law 'Inhumane and Isolating'

MOSCOW, Dec. 7 (UPI)–Elton John called Russia’s law banning the propaganda of homosexuality “inhumane and isolating” during a concert in Moscow.

The British musician, who is openly gay, interrupted his Friday sold-out concert at Crocus Concert Hall to speak out against the anti-gay legislation that critics say can be used to ban gay rights events, the BBC reported.

“In my opinion, it is inhumane and it is isolating,” he said during the show.

He dedicated his concert to 23-year-old Vladislav Tonovoi, a man beaten and tortured to death in a suspected homophobic killing this year in Russia, RIA Novosti reported.

John told Britain’s The Guardian in September he felt an obligation to perform in Russia even after the passage of the legislation.

“As a gay man, I can’t leave those people on their own without going over there and supporting them,” he said. “I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I’ve got to go.”
