Director of Gay-Themed Teen Flick Complains About R Rating

The director of a new film featuring gay themes and characters is blasting the movie ratings board for giving the comedy an R rating.

G.B.F., set for a Jan. 14 debut, earned the rating for “sexual references.” Director Darren Stein feels the film should be a PG-13 affair. The film follows a pair of gay teens who are outed in very different ways.

The tone is very sweet and good-natured; there’s no nudity and no violence,” he said. “There’s not even the F-word.

Stein, in a previous chat with The Huffington Post, described the film as a departure from other teen features.

G.B.F.” has a gooey emotional center that also makes it stand apart from its teen and tween-geared cinematic coevals: “Ultimately the movie is about treating everyone as an individual, and that goes for both the gay and straight kids in the film.
