Report: 'RoboCop' Remake Trades Reagan-Era Slams for Fox News Satire

The 1987 film RoboCop did more than prove actor Peter Weller had the most distinct jawline in Hollywood.

The action film commented sourly on both privatization and a corporate climate the film industry sneered at during the 1980s. According to TCM, “The target in RoboCop is unmistakably the corporate and militaristic culture of the Reagan era.”

The remake, due to hit theaters Feb. 12, couldn’t hit the same subjects. Instead, it focuses on concerns over privacy, drones and the not-so-hidden menace that is … Fox News.

An early review of the film says the new RoboCop isn’t kind to business types, either. The critic says the film saves its heaviest firepower to blast away at a conservative pundit played by Samuel L. Jackson.

The satire here lies squarely in the portrayal of right wing Republican news centres like Fox News and Bill O’Reilly type personas. Samuel Jackson milks this role with much gusto, highlighting the same way how news agencies of the type are so embedded in pushing their own agenda and pervasiveness on changing social opinion.

RoboCop stars Joel Kinnaman in the title role alongside Michael Keaton, Gary Oldman and Abbie Cornish.
