Oprah Winfrey in Talks to Make Broadway Debut

NEW YORK, Feb. 6 (UPI)–Media mogul Oprah Winfrey is in talks to make her Broadway debut opposite Audra McDonald in a revival of “‘Night, Mother,” the New York Times reported.

George C. Wolfe would direct the production of Marsha Norman’s two-hander during the 2015-16 season, the newspaper said.

“Oprah has had a longstanding desire to act on Broadway,” producer Scott Sanders told the Times. “She understands how unique and challenging performing live on stage will be as an actress. She and I have been looking at a number of plays and roles in order to find material and a character that truly resonate with her. We’ve recently read something that we’re both excited about but are not yet ready to officially announce the specifics.”

Playbill.com said the drama — about a mother trying to prevent her daughter from committing suicide — opened on Broadway in March 1983 with Kathy Bathes and Anne Pitoniak. Edie Falco and Brenda Blethyn starred in a 2004 revival.

Winfrey was most recently seen in the critically acclaimed blockbuster film, “Lee Daniels’ The Butler.”
