The project is based on a 2007 documentary short directed by Cynthia Wade.

“Freeheld” tells the inspiring true story of Stacie Andree (Page) and New Jersey police detective Laurel Hester (Moore), a devoted couple whose world is shattered when Laurel becomes terminally ill and government officials prevent her from assigning her pension benefits to Stacie.

Laurel’s conservative partner, Detective Dane Wells, is shocked when he learns of Laurel’s orientation, but becomes the leader in the fight for gay rights
